Job description

Join to apply for the Senior Scientist I/II, In Vivo Pharmacology (Echocardiography) – CVM role at Novartis

Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist specialized in echocardiography to join our in vivo pharmacology team in the Cardiovascular and Metabolic (CVM) Disease Area at the Novartis BioMedical Research (BR) facility located in Cambridge, MA. Cardiometabolic disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Our team is dedicated to the creation and development of innovative medicines to change this alarming statistic. We conceive, develop, validate, and employ pharmacological tools to evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel cardiometabolic drug candidates.

As an experienced and skilled lab-based echocardiographer, you will work both independently and collaboratively in an inter-disciplinary setting to execute experiments in preclinical models of cardiovascular disease. You will perform multi-mode echocardiography including strain by speckle tracking and Doppler imaging for heart systolic function and diastolic function. You will collect, analyze, and interpret echo images, and report cardiac structural and functional data in both written study reports and at team meetings. You will support drug discovery for heart failure and arrhythmia therapeutics by participating in pharmacodynamic/pharmacokinetic (PK/PD) and efficacy studies, while broadening your knowledge in the non-invasive imaging field.

This position will be located at Cambridge and will not have the ability to be located remotely.

Key responsibilities:

  • Independently design, execute, analyze, and document in vivo echocardiographic experiments in heart failure and/or arrhythmia animal models.
  • Employ good laboratory, data recording and data documentation practices.
  • Establish new imaging techniques and approaches to support heart failure or arrhythmia studies.
  • Support drug discovery projects with PK/PD studies.
  • Collaborate effectively while working in a matrixed environment.
  • Present results in lab and department meetings.
  • Assist in the completion of research reports to support regulatory filings.

Role Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters in pharmacology, physiology, or other life sciences area
  • 3-5+ years of relevant experience in rodent echocardiography.
  • Experience in handling, dosing, and phenotyping animal models of disease, ideally with an emphasis in heart failure, arrhythmia or cardiorenal disease, experience with non-rodent models would be a bonus
  • Drug discovery experience desirable.
  • Experience in working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and experience with common statistical software for biomedical research.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Strong written, oral and record keeping skills.
