Job summary

AstraZeneca plc is seeking a Senior Scientist, Cell Therapy Bioscience in Gaithersburg, MD. This predominantly laboratory-based discovery role combines hands-on immunology and cellular engineering with quantitative and computational work to guide experimental design and scientific decision-making.

You will collaborate with computational and data science colleagues, apply AI/ML concepts, and contribute to multidisciplinary project teams while advancing next-generation cell therapies.

Qualifications

• PhD with relevant research experience in Immunology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience conducting independent research in Cell Therapy, Immunology or related fields.
• Strong understanding of NK and T-cell and immune-cell biology.
• Hands-on experience with immune-cell functional assays and primary human cell culture.
• Expertise in multiparameter flow cytometry and data interpretation.
• Ability to design experiments, troubleshoot and translate results into conclusions.
• Strong quantitative and data-driven mindset with statistical analysis skills.
• Ability to collaborate with computational biology and data science teams.

Responsibilities

• Conducts hands-on drug discovery research experiments independently.
• Design and execute functional studies to assess immune-cell activation, cytotoxicity, proliferation, cytokine production and phenotype.
• Perform primary human immune-cell culture and genetic manipulation as needed.
• Design multiparameter flow cytometry studies and analyze data.
• Integrate findings across assays and omics datasets to guide next experiments.
• Assess data implications and communicate conclusions to teams.
• Collaborate in a matrix environment and share relevant literature.
• Prepare and deliver presentations within the Cell Therapy Unit and other functions.
• Ensure compliance with internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations.
• Apply statistical analysis and AI-enabled tools to explore biological patterns.
