Position summary
The Senior Scientist works within the Technology (R&D) group to expand our technical capabilities by leading innovation around waveguide fabrication, evaluation, and/or packaging. As a part of the Technology group, the Senior Scientist will contribute to the technology roadmap by conceptualizing, developing, and leading R&D programs involving nonlinear optics and electro-optic modulation. This position is expected to serve as a local expert, providing technical guidance to the Delivery (Production) group, and solving complex problems independently and as part of a team.
Key responsibilities
- Identify and develop novel ideas and use-cases for nonlinear components, including pursuing funding when appropriate.
- Advance technical capabilities consistent with technology and product roadmaps.
- Serve as a Principal Investigator on internal and externally funded programs.
- Independently execute complex technical tasks with minimal oversight.
- Regularly communicate technical progress, challenges, and upcoming work with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and members of the Technology team.
- Develop and execute advanced experimental techniques to characterize waveguide-based devices.
- Author and contribute to internal and external reports containing trustworthy data and defensible conclusions.
- Independently generate high-quality data to inform technical decisions.
- Provide technical guidance and feedback to the Technology and Delivery teams.
- Act as a technical mentor to colleagues in both the Technology and Delivery teams.

- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role.
Required qualifications
- Advanced degree in Physics, Engineering or related field.
- 5+ Years demonstrated experience in an optics or photonics R&D setting.
- Strong experimental and/or theoretical background with optical waveguides and nonlinear optics.
- Demonstrated expertise related to waveguide fabrication, nonlinear optics, electro-optic modulation, periodic poling, and/or RF photonics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate with experts and nonexperts.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Due to the nature of the work and applicable regulations, this position requires U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience writing proposals and running federally funded programs
- Proficiency in modelling optical systems
- Demonstrated experience with instrumentation control via Python or similar
- Applications-based knowledge of nonlinear optics in quantum systems
- Knowledge of quantum optics, quantum light characterization techniques, and photon entanglement generation
- Experience designing, characterizing, and/or fabricating RF coplanar waveguides
- Proficiency in the design and characterization of electro-optic waveguide-based devices
