Job summary

Hawthorn Photonics (US), Inc. in Bozeman, MT, is seeking a Senior Scientist to expand our capabilities in waveguide fabrication, evaluation, and packaging within the Technology (R&D) group.

You will conceptualize and lead R&D programs around nonlinear optics and electro-optic modulation, serving as a local expert for the Production team. The role requires an advanced degree and 5+ years in optics/photonics R&D, with excellent communication skills and US citizenship.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Physics, Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in optics or photonics R&D.
• Strong experimental/theoretical background with optical waveguides and nonlinear optics.
• Expertise in waveguide fabrication, nonlinear optics, electro-optic modulation, periodic poling, RF photonics.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to communicate with experts and nonexperts.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• U.S. citizenship required due to regulations.

Responsibilities

• Identify and develop novel ideas and use-cases for nonlinear components, pursuing funding when appropriate.
• Advance technical capabilities aligned with technology/product roadmaps.
• Serve as a Principal Investigator on internal and externally funded programs.
• Independently execute complex technical tasks with minimal oversight.
• Regularly communicate technical progress with the CTO and Technology team.
• Develop and execute advanced experimental techniques to characterize waveguide-based devices.
• Author and contribute to internal and external reports with trustworthy data.
• Independently generate high-quality data to inform technical decisions.
• Provide technical guidance to Technology and Delivery teams.
• Act as a technical mentor to colleagues in Technology and Delivery teams.
• Support the sales team through technical customer interactions when appropriate.
