Job summary

AdvR Inc. designs and manufactures advanced electro-optic and non-linear photonics components, spanning R&D to production. The Photonics Engineer role supports production through assembly, characterization, and troubleshooting of photonic products, and develops SOPs for key processes.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Position Summary

AdvR designs and manufactures advanced electro-optic and non-linear photonics components for high-performance commercial and government applications. Our work spans research and development through production, requiring close collaboration across disciplines. As part of the Hawthorn Photonics Group, which also includes Covesion (Southampton, UK) and Radiantis (Barcelona, Spain), AdvR benefits from shared expertise and a broad technology portfolio across the photonics industry. AdvR’s Photonics Team is responsible for assembling and testing photonic components using internally and externally sourced components and compiling/disseminating data appropriately throughout the process. The Photonics Engineer is responsible for supporting production through assembly, characterization, and troubleshooting of photonic products. Photonics Engineers develop and maintain procedures for key processes in the photonics team.

Key Responsibilities

• Device assembly, troubleshooting and characterization for frequency conversion and phase modulation
• Setup and perform experiments for Research & Development (R&D) efforts and communicate the results
• Develop and maintain experimental and measurement setups including software and hardware developed internally and externally
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key processes
• Support prototype builds, integration, and troubleshooting
• Collaborate with the internal Technology and Product Design teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, scalable, and cost-effective
• Investigate and resolve product issues encountered during production or customer use
• Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of products and processes
• Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs evolve, consistent with the scope of the role

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or 5+ years of hands‑on experience)
• Strong foundation in optics, photonics, or electro-optics
• Experience with optical test equipment and laboratory practices
• Strong problem‑solving, communication, and documentation skills
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
• Ability to follow precise written and verbal procedures
• Strong attention to detail
• Organized and dependable
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands‑on experience with fiber pigtailing, fiber optic frequency conversion and electro‑optic modulation
• Experience working in production or manufacturing environments
• Lean manufacturing experience
