Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a Safety Engineer to lead hazard identification, strengthen safety controls, and keep facilities and field operations running safely across a large geographic area.

You will conduct safety surveys, develop emergency plans, and provide OSHA mandated training (Defensive Driving, OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR/AED, confined space, lockout/tagout). Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of safety experience required; NC CDL needed or obtainable within 360 days.

Qualifications

  • Ability to interpret local, state, and federal regulations and apply them to practice.
  • Experience with hazard identification, risk analysis, and safety program development.
  • Familiarity with industrial hygiene, engineering controls, and OSHA standards.

  • Prepare safety audits, job hazard analyses, emergency plans, environmental compliance projects, and accident investigations.
  • Support managers in selecting safety equipment that meets EPA, NFPA, NIOSH, and OSHA standards.

Description of Work

What You Bring:

Strong engineering knowledge across multiple disciplines, excellent communication skills, the ability to interpret regulations, experience with heavy equipment operations, and expertise in industrial hygiene, risk management, biohazards, data systems, project management tools, and fiscal management.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Salary Grade and Salary Range

NC17 / $60,881 - $106,544

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and related disciplines including civil, industrial, mechanical, electrical, chemical, ergonomics, fire protection, and human factors.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply directives, laws, and regulations from local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Knowledge of risk management, occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, biohazards, and chemical carcinogens.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze safety problems and apply standard and non‑standard safety solutions.
  • Skill in computer systems, data processing, and statistical process control.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with a major in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or one of the physical sciences or an equivalent technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of three years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
