Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) seeks a Senior Software Engineer to develop software powering advanced robotic systems. You will collaborate with internal teams and sponsors across the product lifecycle, integrating software with sensors, hardware, and platforms.

You will design, implement, and test robust software while mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives in a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent with 5 years of software development experience.
• Strong mastery of modern C in a Linux environment with maintainable architectures.
• Proficiency in Python for data analysis, automation, and validation.
• Experience with network protocols, IPC, and real-time data streaming.
• Excellent technical communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.
• Foundational understanding of software engineering in physical or cyber-physical systems.
• Experience with Git workflows, automated testing, and bug tracking.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build complex software systems for robotic platforms and infrastructure.
• Provide technical leadership and drive high-level software architecture and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers, UI/UX, product leads, and sponsors to translate needs into specs.
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews and guidance.
• Build and maintain development tooling, CI/CD, logging, and telemetry for real-time robotic systems.
• Prototype state-of-the-art robotics techniques in C and Python for novel problems.
• Lead full lifecycle testing from unit tests to field testing with hardware.
