Job summary

ms consultants, inc. seeks a Senior Roadway Engineer / Project Manager for Raleigh or Wilmington, NC. This role focuses on designing highway and local road projects, leading design teams when needed, and delivering projects on schedule and within budget.

Qualified candidates hold a NC PE or can obtain within 6 months, with experience in NCDOT standards and roadway design tools. Strong client interaction and mentoring skills are essential.

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina is required, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Proficiency in design, preparation, and delivery of roadway design plans (NCDOT design experience preferred).

Responsibilities

• Design complex interstate geometrics and local road projects.
• Possibly lead a design team with growth potential.
• Prepare design schedules and cost estimates; deliver submittals on time and within budget.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships through presentations.
• Assist in contract negotiations and scope changes as needed.
• Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and staff to execute projects.

What You'll Do

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to design complex interstate geometrics and local road projects. Depending on your experience, you may also lead a design team, with both immediate and long‑term growth potential. Key responsibilities include:

• Roadway Design: Take charge of the design and plan preparation for both highway and local road projects.
• Quality Assurance: Lead internal quality reviews to ensure that plans meet the highest technical standards.
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and feedback to junior engineers, helping them grow professionally.
• Proposal Development: Assist in preparing and negotiating project fee proposals.
• Project Scheduling and Budgeting: Prepare design schedules, construction cost estimates, and deliver staged project submittals on time and within budget.
• Client Interaction: Build and maintain strong client relationships through presentations and regular communication.
• Scope and Change Management: Recognize scope changes and assist with contract negotiations when necessary.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with a talented team of engineers, technicians, and administrative staff to successfully execute transportation projects.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• BS in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited College or University.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina is required, or ability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Proficiency in the design, preparation, and delivery of roadway design plans (NCDOT design experience preferred).

Skills & Knowledge:

• Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, and NCDOT standards.
• Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, and AutoCAD.
• Prior experience managing projects, including developing proposals and overseeing project timelines and budgets.
• Background in mentoring or managing teams with the ability to collaborate effectively and independently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients and team members alike.
