Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking a Senior Transportation Engineer to join our Illinois Transportation team. You will lead hands-on roadway design for IDOT projects, applying standards and using ORD for modeling and plan production.

You will mentor junior engineers and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality designs. The role requires a PE license, a Civil/Transportation/Structural degree, 12 years of related experience, and willingness to travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering and PE license.
• 12 years of related experience.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Perform hands-on roadway design for IDOT projects, including highways, interchanges, and complex urban/rural corridors.
• Apply IDOT Design Manuals, Standards, Specifications, and Guidelines to develop compliant, constructible designs.
• Use OpenRoads Designer (ORD) for geometric design, corridor modeling, plan production, and coordination.
• Prepare, check, and review roadway geometry, profiles, cross sections, grading, and drainage designs per IDOT and FHWA requirements.
• Develop and review design calculations for alignment, sight distance, superelevation, drainage, and other components.
• Review plan sets and provide detailed technical comments and quality checks.
• Coordinate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to ensure integration of roadway, drainage, traffic, utilities, and structures.
• Develop IDOT project specifications, provisions, and cost estimates.
• Support field investigations and site visits; assess conditions and constructability constraints.
• Respond to IDOT and agency comments; revise designs and documents as required.
• Contribute to proposals with approach narratives, scope input, and workload estimates.
• Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior engineers and mentor them.
