Job description

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Anaerobic Microbiology: Perform bacterial culturing, including assays to assess bacterial growth and metabolic activity.
  2. Metabolite Extraction and Analysis: Extract metabolites from bacterial cultures and characterize using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
  3. Bacterial Genetics: Conduct bacterial genetic cloning and recombinant DNA techniques, including PCR, plasmid construction, site-directed mutagenesis, transposon library development, and bacterial transformation.
  4. Clinical Sample Processing: Process patient samples (e.g., stool, biopsies) for multi-omics characterization, including DNA, RNA, Protein, and metabolite extractions.
  5. Collaboration and Training: Train and work with a physician-scientist clinical research fellow and collaborate with an established postdoctoral researcher. Ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Culture Preparation and Maintenance: Prepare and maintain anaerobic and aerobic bacterial cultures, including specialized media for gut microbiome research.
  2. LC-MS Operation: Operate and maintain liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems.
  3. Data Management: Keep accurate records of experiments and results.
  4. Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized workspace with necessary supplies.
  5. Clinical Study Support (Optional): Assist with sample collection and patient consent processes, if interested and time permits.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences such as microbiology, biochemistry, or cell biology.
  • Experience in microbiology, especially anaerobic culturing techniques.
  • Preferred experience in bacterial genetics (PCR, mutagenesis, recombinant DNA) and/or metabolomics (mass spectrometry).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing and walking (34-66%)
  • Occasional sitting and other physical activities as listed, with specific weight handling capacities.
  • Constantly required to see, talk, hear, and feel.
