Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory seeks a Research Computing Software Engineer to develop and maintain software for research computing in HPC and cloud environments, supporting the research community with scalable workflows.

You will lead a team of engineers and researchers to deliver innovative software solutions, analyze performance, and integrate tools with existing infrastructure while documenting technical details for users.

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor's Degree with 6+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires Bachelor's Degree with 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent for Advanced Professional track.
  • ARL’s mission is to solve challenging scientific and engineering problems for Navy/DoD/Intel communities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications and tools for research computing needs.
  • Implement efficient algorithms and data structures for large datasets and complex computations.
  • Write clean, well-documented, maintainable code using modern programming languages.
  • Integrate software solutions with existing research computing infrastructure, including cloud platforms.
  • Collaborate with engineers and researchers to ensure seamless tool integration and functionality.
  • Analyze and optimize performance to meet high computational demands.
  • Identify and address bottlenecks, memory usage, and other technical challenges.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for researchers.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for software tools and user guides.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in software engineering and computational research technologies.
  • Lead or participate in software development projects, including planning, development, testing, and deployment.
  • May supervise staff, including hiring, development, and performance management.
