Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University in Reston, VA seeks a Research Computing Software Engineer to build and advance HPC environments for DoW modeling and simulation. You will develop software, automate deployments with IaC, and collaborate with researchers and engineers to enable scalable research computing.

Qualifications include an advanced degree or equivalent experience, strong coding and automation skills, and eligibility for Secret-level clearance.

Qualifications

  • Experience integrating software with HPC and cloud through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to analyze and optimize software performance for computational workloads.
  • Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications and tools for research computing.
  • Proficient in writing clean, well-documented code or scripts.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications and tools to support research computing needs.
  • Write clean, well-documented code and automation scripts (Ansible).
  • Integrate software with HPC systems and cloud platforms.
  • Collaborate with researchers and systems engineers to ensure tool functionality within the research environment.
  • Analyze and optimize performance of software to meet computational demands.
  • Identify and address bottlenecks, memory usage issues, and other technical challenges.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for software issues to researchers.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in software engineering and computational research technologies including AI/LLMs.
  • Propose and implement new features and updates to enhance functionality.
  • Lead or participate in software development projects through planning, testing, and deployment.
  • May supervise staff including hiring, development, and performance management.
