The position provides legal advice on insurance matters to the Insurance Commissioner and related divisions, answers inquiries on statutes and case law, and represents the Commissioner in circuit court as authorized.

Responsibilities

• Performs advanced level legal work and supervisory duties under limited supervision.
• Provides supervision and direction of attorneys and support staff in the Legal Regulatory unit and assigns work to other attorneys, civil investigators, paralegals and secretaries.
• Gives legal advice on insurance matters to the Commissioner and other divisions of the Insurance Commissioner’s Office.
• Responds to questions from lawyers and others on insurance and workers' compensation statutes, rules and case law.
• Interprets court opinions and statutes; prepares for administrative hearings and supervises staff in investigations or actions; files pleadings and represents the Commissioner in court as authorized.
• Researches and drafts legislation and rules; represents the Commissioner in meetings; conducts legal research and prepares memoranda and briefs.
