Job description

Senior Regulatory Analyst | Advanced Nuclear Energy | Washington, D.C.

Hanson Search is exclusively partnering with a fast-growing, venture-backed advanced nuclear energy company to appoint a Senior Regulatory Analyst to its Washington, D.C. team.

Our client is building a genuinely new global industry, deploying nuclear energy technology to serve ports, industry and grids. Much of the regulatory pathway for what they do is still being written, which makes this a rare chance to shape how a new sector is regulated from the ground up.

The role

Reporting to the Vice President, Regulatory and Licensing, you'll lead regulatory tasks and workstreams from first question to finished product. You'll be trusted to scope an ambiguous question, decide what evidence is needed, run the analysis and put a defensible recommendation in front of senior leadership.

This is a hands‑on role. You'll do your own research and writing, quality‑check the work of others, brief external advisers and represent the company at working level with regulators and industry bodies.

Recent work includes responding to a proposed NRC rulemaking, reviewing how long-standing federal legislation affects the build and operation of new energy infrastructure, and early work on environmental permitting at a candidate US site.

Day to day, you will:

  • Own regulatory tasks end to end, from scoping and agreeing deliverables to running the analysis and delivering the output
  • Break ambiguous business questions into structured research programs with clear methods and decision points
  • Assess how regulatory frameworks apply across jurisdictions, test precedents, and set out gaps, risks, options and a clear recommendation
  • Translate regulatory positions into their commercial and engineering consequences so colleagues can act on them
  • Produce position papers, decision papers and gap analyses for the executive team and external audiences
  • Draft and coordinate rulemaking comments, consultation responses and white papers with Legal and Government Affairs
  • Represent the company at working level with the NRC, EPA, USCG, IAEA and other regulators and standards bodies
  • Brief and manage external counsel and specialist advisers, and review and mentor the work of Regulatory Analysts
What they're looking for

You don't need deep nuclear expertise. Our client wants people who have already delivered serious regulatory work in a demanding environment, in whichever sector they did it.

  • Typically 5+ years' experience in a regulatory, licensing, policy, legal or analytical role, including delivering work with limited supervision
  • Experience in a complex or heavily regulated sector, such as energy and utilities, maritime, infrastructure, aviation, rail, defense, pharma, medical devices, financial services or telecoms
  • A background in a regulator, government, law firm, consultancy, think tank, trade association, industry or a congressional office would all be relevant
  • A track record of turning ambiguous questions into structured analysis and defensible recommendations
  • Direct experience engaging with regulators, government or standards bodies, and managing external advisers
  • Nuclear, maritime or environmental regulatory experience is a plus but not essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to make a concise recommendation to executives
  • A degree in law, policy, international relations, engineering, science, economics or a related field
  • Authorized to work in the US, able to meet requirements for access to controlled information, and willing to travel occasionally
