Job summary

Durham County Government seeks a Deputy Assessor Real Property to oversee the assessment of all real property in Durham County under the Machinery Act and to apply the Schedule of Values to each property. The role works independently with limited supervision and reports major activities in periodic meetings.

Essential duties include supervising staff, coordinating workloads, reviewing valuations, handling taxpayer inquiries, and serving as clerk to the Board of Equalization and Review.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree per the minimum education requirements.
• Six years of real or personal property appraisal experience or equivalent.
• Real Property and Personal Property Appraiser certifications within two years of appointment.
• Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving history.

Responsibilities

• Supervises, directs, and evaluates staff; handles performance and discipline.
• Coordinates work, assigns schedules, and monitors progress and quality.
• Reviews real property values for accuracy and fairness.
• Responds to taxpayers' inquiries via email, phone, and mail.
• Provides guidance for appraisal staff and processes.
• Manages Present Use Value Agricultural, horticultural and forestry programs.
• Serves as clerk to the Board of Equalization and Review.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
