The Mission
Help build a brand-new React Native app for one of the world’s largest annual festivals of music, film, and technology. The custom-built app replaces a white-label vendor solution, and your mission is to make it fast, reliable, and intuitive on Android, so thousands of attendees can check schedules, join sessions, and find their way around the venue at the same time without a hitch.
The Role
As a Senior React Native Engineer with a native Android focus, you’ll own the Android side of a high-visibility consumer app while building core features across the product.
- Core Feature Development: Build primary app modules spanning event schedules, interactive sessions, venue maps, search, user profiles, and personalized lists.
- Android Native Ownership: Lead Android-specific implementations, including FCM push notifications via Airship, notification channels, Android App Links, location permissions, and Google Maps SDK tuning.
- Custom Kotlin Native Modules: Write custom Kotlin Native Modules or TurboModules whenever open-source React Native libraries fall short of performance or platform needs.
- Platform UI & Gesture Polish: Resolve Android UI edge cases, including predictive back gestures, safe area handling, responsive keyboard behavior, and high-performance bottom sheets.
- Real-Device Testing & Parity: Test across a wide range of physical Android devices, chipsets, and screen sizes to keep full feature parity with iOS every release.
The “Must-Haves”
- Production React Native: Current, hands‑on experience developing and supporting high‑traffic, production‑grade React Native applications.
- Native Android (Kotlin): Deep native Android experience in Kotlin, including bridging native code to React Native through custom Native Modules or TurboModules.
- Push & Deep Linking: Direct experience configuring Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) through Airship or equivalent providers, managing Android notification channels, and implementing Android App Links.
- Location & Maps: Production experience integrating and optimizing the Google Maps SDK for Android, including fine‑grained location permissions.
- Performance Optimization: Proven ability to deliver smooth list scrolling, efficient memory usage, and low layout overhead across mid‑range Android devices, screen densities, and OS versions.
- Android System Behavior: Deep understanding of predictive back gestures, edge‑to‑edge safe area insets, soft keyboard adjustments (windowSoftInputMode), and bottom sheet performance.
- Real-Device Testing: Proven ability to test on physical Android devices and maintain functional and visual consistency with iOS releases.
The “Bonus” Skills
- Jetpack Compose: Experience with modern native Android UI development.
- Android NFC: Hands‑on experience with native NFC reader/writer APIs for badge scanning or venue access.
- Jetpack Onboarding Utilities: Experience implementing contextual onboarding tooltips with Android Jetpack libraries.
- Domain Experience: Background in event, ticketing, mapping, or other high‑traffic consumer mobile apps.
- Pragmatic Decision‑Maker: You know when React Native is enough and when native Kotlin is the right call, and you decide based on performance and platform needs.
- Real‑Device Minded: You care how the app behaves on actual hardware, not just in a simulator, and you fix the quirks that show up across Android devices and OS versions.
- Detail‑Oriented: You notice the small things that make mobile feel intuitive, from keyboard behavior to navigation gestures and smooth bottom sheets.
- Ownership‑Oriented: You take full responsibility for complex Android integrations and build custom solutions when existing libraries don’t hold up.
- Collaborative Partner: You work closely with iOS engineers to keep feature parity while respecting the native behaviors that make each platform feel right.
