Job summary

Infleqtion in Madison, WI is seeking a Staff Quantum Sensor Physicist to translate customer needs into practical architectures for deployable atom-based inertial sensors and gravimeters. You will lead cross-disciplinary efforts across physics, optics, mechanics, and electronics to deliver field-ready quantum sensing devices.

The role requires a PhD in a relevant field, hands-on experience with atom interferometry or AMO hardware, and strong communication with customers.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atomic physics, optical physics, quantum sensing, precision measurement, or related field.
  • Experience with atom-based inertial and/or gravitational sensors and related hardware.
  • Ability to balance physics performance with reliability and cost constraints.
  • Experience designing, building, integrating, testing, and debugging complex systems.
  • Experience developing models, simulations, calculations, and/or error budgets.
  • Ability to work with engineering teams across optics, mechanics, electrical, software, and controls.
  • Strong communication to technical and non-technical staff and customers.
  • Up to 10% travel domestically; US work authorization without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in and/or leads research and development projects involving atom interferometry, atom-based inertial and gravitational sensing, cold-atom systems, laser systems, vacuum systems, controls, and quantum sensing systems
  • Translates customer needs, use cases, and specifications into practical quantum sensor architectures, requirements, error budgets, trade studies, operating concepts, and development plans
  • Leads or supports development from concept and architecture phases through test, operation, and deployment
  • Develops and maintains physics models, simulations, calculations, and error budgets to guide architecture decisions and performance estimates
  • Evaluates sensor concepts against real-world constraints including sensitivity, bandwidth, SWaP-C, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and risk
  • Works with engineering teams to convert physics concepts into buildable instrument designs
  • Participates in proposal development and customer technical discussions
  • Communicates project findings and progress to internal stakeholders and external customers
