• 7+ years in life insurance with underwriting exposure or adjacent domains.
• Fluency with underwriting evidence and processes (Part 1/Part 2, MIB, Rx, MVR, APS, table ratings).
• Experience configuring or testing an underwriting rules engine or decisioning platform.
• SQL skills to independently verify data outcomes.
• Experience writing structured test cases or acceptance criteria and defending quality judgments.

• Design test scenarios mirroring underwriting complexity (impairments, evidence sources, table ratings, edge cases).
• Validate rules engine behavior across releases via regression on decision outcomes, not only APIs.
• Translate requirements into testable acceptance criteria with underwriters, actuaries, and product before code is written.
• Build and extend API- and data-level automated checks with the QE team, moving toward full automation for underwriting.
• Investigate production underwriting discrepancies and drive root-cause analysis and defect prevention.

Role overview

A senior individual contributor role on the Quality Engineering team for a life insurance technology platform, acting as the reference authority on underwriting decisioning correctness. The position partners closely with underwriters, actuaries, product, and engineering to make sure rules changes, evidence integrations, and risk classifications hold up before they reach carrier partners. Domain depth in life insurance underwriting is the primary qualification; test automation is valued and can be grown on the job.

Responsibilities

• Own the test strategy and quality signal for underwriting decisioning, including rules changes, evidence ingestion, risk classification, and case outcomes.
• Design test scenarios that mirror actual underwriting complexity, including combinations of impairments, evidence sources, table ratings, and edge cases.
• Validate rules engine behavior across releases through regression on decision outcomes, not just API contracts.
• Translate underwriting requirements into testable acceptance criteria with underwriters, actuaries, and product before code is written.
• Build and extend API-level and data-level automated checks with the core QE team, growing toward full ownership of automation for the underwriting domain.
• Investigate production underwriting discrepancies and drive them from root cause through defect prevention.

Requirements

• 7+ years in life insurance with substantial time in or directly adjacent to underwriting: operations, systems analysis, new business, or platform testing.
• Working fluency with underwriting evidence and process, including application Part 1 and Part 2, Medical Information Bureau (MIB), Rx and MVR data, APS handling, table ratings, NIGO workflows, and accelerated or automated underwriting programs.
• Hands-on experience configuring, analyzing, or testing at least one underwriting rules engine or decisioning platform.
• SQL skills sufficient to independently verify data outcomes.
• Experience writing structured test cases or acceptance criteria and defending quality judgments to engineering and business stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Test automation in code using JavaScript/TypeScript, Playwright, pytest, or similar tooling.
• API testing tools and CI/CD familiarity.
