Job summary

Southwest Steel, a division of SME Industries, seeks a Quality Assurance Manager to oversee the SME Quality System and drive continuous improvement across preconstruction activities.

The role requires experience with structural steel inspections, QMS compliance, and coordination with field teams and third-party inspectors. Candidates should have AWS CWI certification and strong problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 5 years of experience with iron or structural steel inspection during erection.
• Current or previous AWS CWI or similar certification.
• Valid driver's license.
• NDT Level II preferred.
• Ability to understand working mechanisms of tools and machinery.
• Ability to do simple math and/or algebraic formulas as needed.
• Dependable, reliable and able to handle equipment safely and complete work on time.

Responsibilities

• Review contracts and specifications for each project.
• Develop a Project Specific QC Plan for each project.
• Assist in managing the AISC Certification and other Jurisdictional qualifications.
• Assist in ensuring projects receive the correct resources, including personnel and equipment.
• Visit job sites and perform inspections as needed and where required.
• Manage welding procedures and assist in developing PQRs & WPSs.
• Ensure reports and documentation are completed and filed timely.
• Attend Quarterly QC Manager meetings.
• Report to QA/QC Director weekly on needs, issues, and general information.
• Interface with third-party inspectors as needed.
• Manage Non-conformances, Corrective Actions and Root Cause investigations.
• Attend kickoff and drawing review meetings and other preconstruction tasks.
• Interface with SME Safety Professionals as needed.
• Review equipment and calibration logs when appropriate.
• Perform duties in line with contract specs and SME Quality Management System.
• Work weekends, shifts, and different locations as required.
• Pay close attention to detail for inspections and compliance with final product.
• Other duties as assigned.
