Job summary

Onto Innovation is seeking a Software Test Engineer to be onsite in Wilmington, MA. You will verify complex software across cross-functional teams, develop test plans, and execute automated and manual tests for next-generation Inspection solutions.

You will collaborate with software, hardware, and manufacturing groups to ensure quality and reliability while contributing to design and feature validation. The role emphasizes multi-threaded debugging, client/server testing, and Agile practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Ability to understand requirements and design test strategies and plans based on those requirements.
• Proven experience (8+ years) in software testing and/or systems level testing for highly technical applications.
• Experience developing automated tests and scripting (Python, JavaScript, etc.).
• On-the-job experience with generative/agentic AI tools like MS Copilot to accelerate and go deeper with software testing.
• Experience testing client/server solutions.
• Excellent skillset focused on Windows development, the .NET platform (C#, C++), and relational databases (SQL Server a plus).
• Experience with Agile, Scrum, or Kanban methodologies.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail and quality.
• Demonstrated experience debugging complex multi-threaded environments.

Responsibilities

• Perform requirements-based and system level testing across projects and platforms ensuring quality and efficiency for Onto's Inspection Business Unit solutions.
• Cross-functional collaboration with software, hardware, manufacturing and applications teams to validate software.
• Analyze and verify software requirements for testability, clarity and completeness.
• Develop comprehensive test plans for new features and products.
• Investigate, reproduce, log and escape issues/defects.
• Develop efficient test strategies (test cases and procedures) for the different sub-systems comprising the product.
• Develop and execute automated and manual tests, regression, functional, and acceptance tests.
• Conduct thorough testing and debugging of software to ensure high-quality and reliable operation.
• Participate in the design and implementation of new features and functionalities.
• Perform design/code reviews for automation scripts and manual test cases, collaborating with systems engineers, software developers, and other technical staff.
• Provide technical support and guidance to other team members.
• Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies in software development and hardware-software integration.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled Software Test Engineer to join our team, onsite in Wilmington, MA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in verification and validation of complex software. You will be a key contributor on a team developing next generation solutions for our Inspection Business Unit. Compensation & Growth

• Base Salary Range: $115,200.00 - $172,800.00, offered in good faith and based on experience, location, and qualifications.
• Additional Rewards: Annual bonus opportunities and potential long-term incentives tied to both company and individual success.
