Job summary

State of Washington Dept. of Social and Health Services is seeking a Public Benefits Specialist 4 - Case Planning and Support Specialist to join the Virtual Case Management Center.

You will independently determine and re-determine client eligibility, conduct intensive interviews, develop service plans and referrals, and interpret WAC/RCW to ensure compliant, trauma‑informed support for BFET and TANF clients across WA.

Qualifications

• Eligibility expertise – deep knowledge of Washington public assistance programs and eligibility re-determination.
• Policy fluency – ability to apply WAC, RCW and internal manuals to ensure legally sound services.
• Case planning insight – build realistic, trauma-informed service plans for clients.
• Analytical skills – interpret complex data for fast, high-stakes decisions.
• Communication – clear, respectful, empathetic communication with clients and partners.
• Crisis navigation – work calmly with clients in distress while maintaining boundaries.
• Resilience and flexibility – adapt to changing priorities and multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

• Independently determines and re-determines client eligibility for public assistance programs.
• Conducts intensive interviews with clients to assess needs and eligibility.
• Develops service plans and referrals to programs and services.
• Interprets Washington Administrative Code and RCW to ensure compliance.
• Collaborates with tribes, state agencies, and community organizations.
