Job summary

DoorDash Labs in San Francisco is seeking a Prototype Machinist & Fabrication Specialist to lead production of high-precision prototype components using 5-axis CNC machines, lathes, and manual mills. You will oversee 3D printing workflows, design custom jigs and tooling, and ensure parts meet exact specifications from CAD drawings.

You will collaborate with Mechanical Engineers on DFMs, perform regular maintenance, manage tooling inventories, and support assembly and testing of robotic delivery

Qualifications

• Minimum 7+ years in a high-precision machine shop or prototype environment.
• Mastery of 5-axis CNC programming and operation, CNC lathes, and manual machining equipment.
• Proficiency with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, CMM).
• Hands-on experience with professional 3D printing platforms (Formlabs, Markforged, Carbon).
• Ability to read blueprints/CAD models and verify tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Operate and program 5-axis CNC machines, lathes, and manual mills to produce high-tolerance prototype components.
• Oversee 3D printing workflows (FDM, SLS, SLA) and post-processing.
• Design/fabricate jigs, fixtures, and tooling for complex assemblies.
• Interpret drawings/CAD models to ensure exact specifications.
• Provide feedback on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to optimize parts.
• Maintain shop hygiene, EH&S compliance, and calibration schedules.
• Coordinate with Mechanical Engineers on part quality and fixtures.
• Assist in assembly and debugging of robotic platforms in testing.
