Job summary

DoorDash Labs in San Francisco, CA, seeks aPrototype Machinist & Fabrication Specialist to turn complex designs into high-precision hardware. You will lead 5-axis CNC programming, operate lathes, manual mills, and manage an extensive 3D printing fleet to support autonomous delivery prototypes.

You’ll interpret drawings, advise on manufacturability improvements, perform routine PM, and collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to accelerate prototyping while maintaining safety and a clean shop

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in a high-precision machine shop, R&D lab, or prototype environment.
• Mastery of 5-axis CNC programming and operation, CNC lathes, and manual machining equipment.
• Proficiency with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, CMM).
• Hands-on experience with premium 3D printing platforms (Formlabs, Markforged, Carbon).
• Strong manual dexterity for precision assembly and tooling operation.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and work around machinery.
• Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, HSMWorks, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Onshape).
• Willingness to wear PPE and work safely.

Responsibilities

• Operate and program 5-axis CNC machines, lathes, and manual mills to produce high-tolerance prototype components.
• Oversee daily operation, post-processing, and maintenance of 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLS, SLA).
• Design and fabricate custom jigs, fixtures, and tooling for complex assemblies and testing.
• Interpret drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to meet exact specifications.
• Provide feedback on Design for Manufacturability to optimize part production.
• Perform preventative maintenance on shop machinery and equipment.
• Manage inventory of machinist consumables (cutting tools, inserts, coolants, resins, filaments).
• Assist in assembly, wiring, and mechanical troubleshooting of robotic delivery platforms.
