Job description

Position Overview

The technologies of future transportation solutions will include increasing levels of automation, connectivity, electrification, and customer services, which are currently revolutionizing our vehicles. International Motors’ Autonomous Systems and Safety team is responsible for developing and defining our vehicle systems behavior, the safety case in alignment with legal standards and best practices, and autonomous and control center concept design. Our concepts and requirements are guided by customer needs, legal standards, technical standards, or internal specifications for mechanical, electrical, and software elements of defined systems.

Senior Project Engineer – Autonomous Vehicle Safety is part of the Systems and Safety Engineering team, establishing and developing vehicle systems with a focus on supporting autonomous technology development in automotive engineering. This position will work closely with the global team, product owner, component groups, software engineering teams, and validation group during the product lifecycle.

This role involves supporting the global development process by actively participating in key meetings, including PI planning and sprint planning, and delivering tasks as outlined in sprint planning sessions.

Responsibilities
  1. Represent vehicle functional safety standards in the product definition and safety case approach:
    • ISO 26262 (functional safety for automotive)
    • SOTIF (ISO/PAS 21448) – Safety of the Intended Functionality
    • ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels) classification
  2. Gather and define product demands, including safety artifacts, safe operation documentation, and safety driver training materials
  3. Coordinate safety concept sign-off with local and global stakeholders
  4. Collect and include architecture demands, principles, and requirements to support desired system functionality
  5. Analyze dependencies and interactions in complex automotive and autonomous vehicle systems
  6. Develop appropriate documentation to support the system development process
  7. Collaborate with vehicle systems and cybersecurity engineers to align safety and security into system design
  8. Collaborate with the program team and product owner to support program goals and develop standard processes to ensure timely deliverables
  9. Lead or participate in issue resolution activities during development, validation, and vehicle launch
  10. Contribute to continuous improvement activities through participation in Lean projects, design standards, and process improvements
  11. Problem solving and implementing solutions into the functional safety concept
Minimum Requirements
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Computer Science
  2. Minimum 12 years of experience in product design/development or emerging technologies
  3. At least 2 years of experience leading new or specialized technologies

OR

  1. Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Computer Science
  2. Minimum 8 years of relevant experience
  3. At least 2 years of leadership experience in new technologies

OR

  1. PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Computer Science
  2. Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  3. At least 2 years of leadership experience
Additional Requirements

Qualified candidates, excluding current employees, must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee, or Asylee). We do not anticipate providing work sponsorship for this position.

Desired Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields
  • Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) or ISO 26262 training/certification
  • Experience with systems engineering, requirements definition, and verification techniques
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum/SAFe methodologies
  • Knowledge of systems decomposition, concept design, data analysis, root cause analysis, and KPI development
  • Experience with software development and engineering tools like MATLAB, MS Visio, INCA, and configuration management tools
  • Familiarity with vehicle electronics and autonomous sensors (Radar, Lidar, Camera, etc.)
  • Data/modeling techniques, quick learner, ownership mindset
  • Strong collaboration, leadership, and communication skills
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and think holistically to resolve system challenges
  • Experience with OEMs or Tier1 suppliers in automotive industry
  • Knowledge of engineering and quality methodologies (8D, FMEA, FTA, DVP&R)
  • Familiarity with modeling, statistics, probability, AI vision techniques, and sensor processing
