The Project Accountant plays a key role in the financial oversight and performance of assigned projects, managing all aspects of project accounting from setup through closeout. Responsibilities include project setup and maintenance, budget development and monitoring, revenue recognition, work-in-progress (WIP) analysis, forecasting support, and ensuring compliance with company policies and financial controls. The role partners closely with project managers and regional leadership to provide timely financial reporting, identify risks and opportunities, analyze project performance, and support informed business decisions. The Project Accountant also collaborates with Billing and Accounts Receivable (AR) teams to facilitate accurate invoicing, monitor collections, resolve financial issues, and help optimize project cash flow and profitability.

What You'll Do:

  • Review and validate project financial data, including budgets, contract values, funding authorizations, billing terms, and revenue recognition components to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Support Project Managers with the setup, maintenance, modification, and closeout of projects within the financial system, ensuring alignment with contractual requirements and company procedures.
  • Establish, enter, and monitor project budgets, contract values, and client-specific billing terms throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Process budget revisions, contract modifications, change orders, and funding adjustments to maintain accurate project financial records.
  • Monitor Work-in-Progress (WIP) balances and aging reports, identifying potential issues and partnering with project teams to resolve outstanding items in a timely manner.
  • Assist with monthly and milestone-based project billing activities, ensuring invoices are accurate, complete, and submitted according to client and contract requirements.
  • Review subconsultant invoices for accuracy, contractual compliance, and appropriate project allocation prior to processing.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers regarding contracts, amendments, change orders, funding limitations, and other project-related matters that impact billing and revenue recognition.
  • Research, analyze, and resolve billing discrepancies, unbilled balances, invoice rejections, and other project accounting issues.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging, communicate with clients and internal stakeholders regarding outstanding balances, and support collection efforts to improve cash flow.
  • Assist in resolving cash application issues and account reconciliations related to Accounts Receivable balances.
  • Generate, analyze, and distribute recurring and ad hoc Accounts Receivable, billing, and project financial reports to support management decision-making.
  • Fulfill reporting and compliance requirements for federal, state, and local agencies, including contract commitments, disadvantaged business participation, and subconsultant payment reporting.
  • Partner with project and finance teams to identify opportunities for process improvements, recommending and implementing enhancements to billing, collections, and project accounting workflows.
  • Maintain compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and standard operating procedures while supporting audit and reporting requirements.
  • Track, prioritize, and follow up on outstanding tasks, financial issues, and project accounting requests to ensure timely resolution and high-quality client service.
  • Serve as a trusted financial resource to Project Managers and operational leaders by providing guidance, analysis, and support on project performance, profitability, and financial risk management.

What You'll Need:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in project accounting or project-based financial management (engineering, construction, or professional services industry)
  • Demonstrated experience with revenue review, WIP analysis, budgets, and contract-based accounting
  • Experience using Deltek Vision or Deltek VantagePoint (or similar project-based ERP) strongly preferred
  • Strong Excel skills, including formula-driven spreadsheets and financial analysis
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and dependable
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Project Managers and finance teams
  • Clear, concise communicator capable of building productive working relationships
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
