Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Company LP in Robinson, Illinois, seeks a Process Design Engineer III / Senior Process Design Engineer to help optimize refinery processes, develop projects, and lead safety reviews. Relocation is approved for this role.

The position involves designing process packages, performing simulations, and coordinating with operations and vendors to ensure reliable, energy-efficient equipment sizing and performance. A mentoring role for junior engineers is also part of the scope.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
• Four years of process engineering experience in refining or heavy industry.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
• Must wear PPE in refinery and perform field tasks.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to long-term refinery strategy and opportunities to increase throughput and reliability.
• Develops process designs for new projects and unit modifications (PFDs, P&IDs, heat/mass balances).
• Performs process simulations and calculations for equipment sizing, hydraulics, energy optimization; leads economic analyses.
• Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and vendors to align design with needs.
• Prepares design packages and supports HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and safety reviews.
• Provides technical leadership during project execution, including reviews, construction support and commissioning.
• Keeps current with industry standards and mentors less experienced engineers.
