Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Privacy Engineer based in United States.

As a Senior Privacy Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and developing technology that protects users' privacy across digital products and services. You will lead complex engineering projects, build innovative privacy solutions, and help strengthen protections against online tracking and emerging threats. Working within a distributed, remote-first engineering team, you will take ownership of major technical components from initial planning through implementation and ongoing improvement. You will collaborate across teams to ensure new features and product developments uphold strong privacy standards. The role offers opportunities to contribute to privacy-focused search technologies, AI-powered experiences, and advanced tracking protection systems. You will also participate in privacy reviews, support engineering best practices, and mentor colleagues as the team grows.

Accountabilities
  • Lead high-impact, complex engineering projects from initial proposal and technical planning through implementation, deployment, and post-project evaluation.
  • Design, develop, and maintain privacy-preserving systems and features that protect users across search technologies, AI experiences, browsers, and related digital services.
  • Build and improve systems that enhance search indexes and AI capabilities while maintaining robust user privacy protections.
  • Develop and extend crawler-based technologies to identify, analyze, and address emerging online tracking methods and privacy threats.
  • Implement, maintain, and optimize privacy features, including web tracking prevention and email protection capabilities.
  • Write pragmatic, efficient, maintainable, and testable code using technologies such as Go, Node.js, Python, and, where appropriate, Perl.
  • Take ownership of critical privacy technology components, ensuring their reliability, security, scalability, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in privacy reviews, technical audits, and product assessments to ensure engineering decisions and new developments align with established privacy principles.
  • Navigate ambiguous technical challenges, identify practical solutions, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to deliver effective outcomes.
  • Communicate technical decisions, project progress, and privacy considerations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentor fellow engineers, share technical knowledge, and contribute to the professional development and long-term growth of the privacy engineering team.
Requirements
  • Significant professional experience in software engineering, with demonstrated expertise in developing and maintaining privacy-focused technologies or solutions.
  • Strong technical understanding of online privacy threats, tracking mechanisms, and the technologies and approaches used to mitigate them.
  • Practical experience building privacy solutions in an engineering role, such as tracker blocking, differential privacy, or comparable privacy-enhancing technologies.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Go, Node.js, Python, or Perl.
  • Proven ability to lead complex, high-impact technical projects from concept and planning through delivery, maintenance, and retrospective analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to work through ambiguous requirements, evaluate trade-offs, propose innovative approaches, and execute solutions effectively.
  • Experience designing reliable, performant, maintainable, and well-tested software systems.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively across functions, involve stakeholders when needed, and communicate technical concepts and decisions to audiences with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • A high degree of ownership, sound judgment, and initiative, with the ability to manage projects independently while contributing to shared team objectives.
  • Interest in mentoring engineers, sharing expertise, and supporting the development of colleagues.
  • Willingness to work remotely with an international team, participate in video meetings with cameras enabled, and travel approximately twice a year for company-wide gatherings and team retreats.
  • Ability to commit to a full-time workload averaging 40 hours per week, with flexibility to coordinate across time zones and no fixed core working hours.
  • Willingness to complete a background check as a condition of employment.
Benefits
  • Annual compensation: €157,350 for Europe and the rest of the world, including India, according to the stated global compensation structure.
  • Equity compensation: Stock options offered in addition to annual salary.
  • Transparent compensation framework: Compensation is standardized by professional level rather than individual location or functional area.
  • Remote-first work environment: Work remotely from India as part of a globally distributed team.
  • Flexible working arrangements: No fixed core hours, offering flexibility in organizing your work around team commitments and project priorities.
  • Wellbeing and family support: Access to support provisions that include paid parental leave.
  • Home office support: Assistance with office setup and coworking allowances.
  • Professional growth: Opportunities to lead complex projects, expand technical expertise, and take ownership of significant privacy engineering initiatives.
  • Mentorship opportunities: Scope to guide other engineers and contribute to the development of the broader engineering team.
  • Mission-driven work: The opportunity to build technology that advances online privacy and helps protect users from tracking and other digital privacy risks.
  • Team connection and collaboration: Opportunities to participate in an annual all-hands gathering and a separate team retreat, typically involving approximately four to five days of travel each.
