Job summary

ELM Utility Services is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead large-scale technical initiatives and drive architectural consistency across multiple domains. You will mentor engineers, collaborate with product, architecture, and executive teams, and design scalable, observable distributed systems that support critical workflows.

The role emphasizes ownership, cross-team collaboration, and long-term reliability, with a starting salary of $120,000–$160,000 dependent on experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven success designing and delivering enterprise-scale applications and platforms.
• Expert-level proficiency in C# and .NET.
• Strong experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, Angular and/or React.
• Deep understanding of API design, distributed systems, and integration patterns.
• Strong experience with relational databases and SQL Server.
• Experience with cloud-native technologies (Azure), containers, CI/CD, and observability tooling.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, security, resiliency, and performance.
• Experience in Agile/Scrum product delivery environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead large-scale technical initiatives from concept through deployment and operational support.
• Provide technical leadership across multiple teams and domains for long-term maintainability.
• Mentor and coach engineers to elevate capability and maturity.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Team Leads, Architects, and Executives to align solutions with business outcomes.
• Design and implement scalable, observable distributed systems and integrations.
• Drive improvements in SDLC, CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies, and operational excellence.
• Champion best practices around performance, security, resiliency and maintainability.
• Participate in technical design reviews, backlog elaboration, and cross-team solutioning.
• Translate complex concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Identify systemic issues and lead modernization efforts.
• Contribute hands-on coding when appropriate.
• Support incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
