Senior Principal Consultant – Engineering Leadership

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Principal Consultant – Engineering Leadership to join a growing technology consulting organization supporting complex enterprise technology transformation initiatives.

This is a senior-level, client-facing leadership opportunity for an accomplished engineering executive, enterprise architect, or technology consultant who combines deep technical expertise with strong project delivery, stakeholder management, and strategic advisory capabilities.

The ideal candidate has experience leading large engineering organizations, advising executive leadership, and driving modernization initiatives across cloud infrastructure, enterprise architecture, DevSecOps, and technology operations.

This role requires someone who can operate at both the strategic and tactical levels—identifying complex business and technology challenges, developing actionable solutions, and ensuring successful delivery across multiple stakeholders and teams.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Strategic Consulting

• Serve as a trusted advisor to senior technology executives, providing guidance on engineering strategy, organizational structure, enterprise architecture, and operational improvements.
• Lead complex technology transformation and modernization initiatives across large enterprise environments.
• Assess existing engineering practices, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop actionable technology roadmaps.
• Provide strategic guidance on cloud architecture, application modernization, platform engineering, and DevSecOps.
• Translate technical challenges into practical business solutions and measurable outcomes.

Client Engagement & Project Delivery

• Lead client-facing consulting engagements, managing project scope, timelines, budgets, deliverables, and stakeholder expectations.
• Coordinate cross-functional engineering teams, external vendors, contractors, and executive stakeholders.
• Facilitate executive presentations, technical workshops, assessments, and strategic planning sessions.
• Identify project risks, resolve dependencies, and ensure accountability throughout the engagement lifecycle.
• Build trusted relationships with senior leadership and communicate effectively across technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Provide architectural leadership across AWS and Azure cloud environments.
• Advise on enterprise systems architecture, infrastructure modernization, integration, disaster recovery, and scalability.
• Guide improvements to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, automation, container orchestration, and release management.
• Support Agile delivery practices, product roadmaps, backlog prioritization, and engineering team effectiveness.
• Ensure technology solutions align with applicable security, regulatory, and compliance requirements.

Consulting Practice Development

• Contribute to the development and growth of engineering consulting capabilities and service offerings.
• Partner with business development and sales teams on client discovery, solution development, proposals, and new opportunities.
• Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and deliver additional business value.
• Mentor engineering leaders, consultants, and technical delivery teams.
• Help establish scalable processes, best practices, and repeatable consulting methodologies.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• 15+ years of experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or enterprise technology.
• 8+ years of engineering leadership experience, including managing engineering teams, managers, or large technical organizations.
• Extensive experience with enterprise architecture, cloud engineering, and technology modernization.
• Strong working knowledge of AWS and/or Azure architecture, infrastructure, networking, and systems design.
• Familiarity with DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and technologies such as Terraform, Kubernetes, and Argo.
• Experience leading complex, multi-team initiatives involving internal teams, contractors, and third-party vendors.
• Strong understanding of Agile methodologies, product management, and technical delivery practices.
• Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
• Demonstrated ability to manage executive-level client relationships, influence stakeholders, and deliver measurable business outcomes.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving capabilities, executive presence, and the ability to navigate complex organizational environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in professional services, management consulting, or technology advisory.
• Background in both public-sector and private-sector technology environments.
• Experience supporting government, healthcare, aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated industries.
• Prior leadership experience as a VP of Engineering, Director of Engineering, Head of Engineering, Principal Enterprise Architect, or Principal Technology Consultant.
• Experience with enterprise data platforms, AI technologies, or large-scale data modernization.
• Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks such as NIST, HIPAA, FedRAMP, or FIPS.
• AWS or Azure professional-level architecture certifications.
• Experience supporting business development, solution consulting, or consulting practice growth.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in helping scale a growing technology consulting organization.
