Job summary

Voya Energy in Hayward, CA is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to own the design, build and test of the power system architecture for our metal-fueled generator technology. You will integrate generator, battery storage, load, and grid interfaces with fast switch-over capabilities.

The role demands hands-on engineering, deep experience with hybrid inverters and power electronics, and a production-like workflow from concept to testing and documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years of relevant industry experience in system-level power electronics.
• Hands-on experience with High Power (25-250kW) Hybrid Inverters and DC-DC conversion.
• Familiarity with AC switching/transfer logic and protection coordination.
• Ability to perform worst-case analysis and simulations (SPICE/PLECS).
• Proficiency in PCB layout with a focus on DFM.
• Proficiency in Altium Designer with high-current/high-voltage layout experience.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks/NX/Creo) and PDM/PLM environments.
• Expert-level use of PLECS, PSIM, or MATLAB/Simulink for power-stage simulation.
• Knowledge of UL 1741 and IEEE 1547.
• Hands-on experience with heat sink sizing and thermal management.
• Firmware experience (C/C++) for microcontrollers.
• Experience with development testing, failure analysis, and documentation control.

Responsibilities

• Rapid Development: Design and bring up the Hybrid Inverter, converter, switches and BMS with speed-to-prototype.
• Load & Grid Management: Design switching logic to power onsite load from hybrid system or grid.
• Intelligent Power Flow: Build charge-and-switch logic to buffer energy and manage transitions.
• Practical Architecture: Source components from multiple vendors to reduce lead times.
• Hardware-Mechanical Synergy: Ensure electronics fit, with thermal management and rugged packaging.
• Small Team Collaboration: Define requirements for software and mechanical peers.
• Testing & Validation: Develop test plans and perform development testing for V&V.
• Document system electrical schematics and operating procedures.
