Job summary

Tierra is seeking an intellectually curious Optimization Engineer to join our team in Boston, MA. You will develop and deploy optimization solutions for short-term energy markets across US power markets, focusing on day-ahead, intraday, and real-time opportunities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related quantitative field or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of post-undergraduate experience in energy or related engineering with production software exposure.
• 3+ years of Python experience and use of LP/MIP/Convex optimization for energy asset dispatch.
• Experience collaborating with teams via GitHub and in agile/lean environments.
• Experience using relational and/or columnar databases and SQL.

Responsibilities

• Develop and refine optimization models for short-term battery dispatch and bidding in multiple wholesale power markets.
• Monitor market prices, operating conditions, and rule changes to identify optimization opportunities and translate into bidding/dispatch improvements.
• Collaborate with data scientists and optimization engineers to identify performance improvements and refine strategies.
• Enhance methods for uncertainty handling (robust/stochastic optimization) and integrate probabilistic forecasts into workflows.
• Promote software development best practices across the optimization codebase (testing, deployment, monitoring).
• Act as a power markets SME for external stakeholders.
• Ability to periodically work extended hours as needed.
