Job summary

Redwood Materials in San Francisco is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer for Energy Storage to design next-generation BESS converters interfacing with battery packs, PV systems, and the grid. Qualifications

• MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering focused on power electronics.
• 3–5 years experience in electrical engineering with focus on power conversion or energy storage.
• Hands-on experience in high-voltage hardware design up to 1.5kVdc and 480Vac.
• Experience with power semiconductor selection, gate drive design, and hardware protection circuits.
• Proficiency with circuit simulation and CAD tools.

Responsibilities

• Design high‑voltage (800V–1.5kVdc, 480–800Vac) and high‑power (10kW–200kW) converters for utility-scale BESS and industrial infra.
• Perform topology trade‑offs evaluating efficiency, power density, cost, and manufacturability.
• Size power‑stage components and select Si/SiC MOSFETs based on losses and thermal management.
• Design gate driver circuits and dedicated gate driver power supplies for safe, high‑frequency switching.
• Lead the design of custom magnetic components (transformers, inductors) with Litz‑wire or PCB-winding architectures.
• Architect the LV subsystem, including auxiliary power supplies, sensing circuitry, and protection.
• Design EMI filters (diff‑mode/common‑mode, X/Y caps) and damping elements.
• Drive HV, high‑power PCB/PCBA layout with proper clearance and signal integrity.
• Collaborate with ME, Control, Firmware to define tests and verification methodologies.
