tastytrade, Inc. is seeking a Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator / Database Engineer in Chicago, hybrid. You will own high-volume OLTP Postgres workloads, tune performance, and design highly available clusters with Patroni.

You will review migrations, assist with performance troubleshooting, and contribute to incident response and documentation. Strong Linux, Ruby/Java skills, and excellent communication are required.

Qualifications

• Deep PostgreSQL expertise with query planner insight.
• Hands-on indexing across multiple types and optimization.
• Experience with replication setups and failover strategies.
• Proven ownership of backup/restore programs (pgBackRest/Barman).
• Linux fundamentals and performance tooling.
• Software development mindset with code reviews and runbooks.
• Proficiency in Ruby and Java; Python literacy.
• Strong written communication and documentation habits.

Responsibilities

• Own performance for high-volume OLTP Postgres workloads, including tuning and partitioning.
• Design, deploy, and operate highly available Patroni clusters with reliable failover.
• Manage backup and recovery end-to-end with PITR and documented RTO/RPO.
• Oversee Postgres across on-prem and Amazon RDS environments, noting differences.
• Plan major-version upgrades and large migrations with minimal downtime.
• Review code/migrations (Ruby, Rails/ActiveRecord; Java/JDBC) for issues.
• Build observability: metrics, slow query capture, locks, capacity forecasting.
• Automate operations; contribute to runbooks and playbooks.
• Participate in on-call rotation and incident postmortems.
