Job summary

IGNA+ tasty seeks a Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator to own the health, performance, and durability of high-throughput Postgres clusters running on on‑prem VM/bare metal and on Amazon RDS. This is a hands‑on role: read query plans, tune indexes, run failover drills, review code, and write high‑quality documentation.

This role covers designing Patroni-based high‑availability clusters, managing backup/restore with pgBackRest and Barman, and coordinating upgrades with minimal downtime.

Qualifications

• Deep PostgreSQL expertise with the query planner and EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) output.
• Experience with indexing strategies across B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN and partial/covering indexes.
• Knowledge of physical and logical replication, replication slots, lag diagnosis, and failure modes.
• Proven ownership of a backup/restore program (pgBackRest/Barman) and production restores.
• Experience operating Postgres at scale in both self-managed and RDS environments.
• Strong Linux fundamentals and performance tooling.
• Software development background with code review and runbooks.
• Proficiency in Ruby and Java, with Python literacy.

Responsibilities

• Own performance for high-volume OLTP Postgres workloads, including query plans, index strategy, and autovacuum tuning.
• Design, deploy, and operate highly available clusters using Patroni with replication topology and failover testing.
• Own the backup and recovery program end to end, including PITR and documented RTO/RPO.
• Manage Postgres in on-prem VM/bare metal and Amazon RDS, noting parameter groups and upgrade paths.
• Plan major-version upgrades and large migrations with minimal downtime.
• Review application code and migrations to catch N+1 queries, unsafe DDL, and missing indexes.
• Build and maintain observability for the database tier (metrics, slow queries, locks).
• Automate routine operations and participate in on-call rotation; write postmortems and runbooks.
• Share knowledge through internal docs and architecture decisions.
