Job summary

City of Thornton is seeking an on-site Aquatics Supervisor to oversee pool operations and supervise staff across City pools and surrounding aquatic facilities.

The role requires strong leadership in safety, customer service, and program delivery, including life-guarding duties and swim instruction. Candidates should have validated Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid certifications and relevant aquatic leadership experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and two full years or three seasons of aquatic leadership as a Head Lifeguard.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certificates; certification in swim instruction such as Red Cross, WSI or equivalent with two years' instruction experience.
  • Lifeguarding certification (Red Cross or Ellis) and ability to obtain required licenses (within reasonable time).
  • May require ability to travel to various locations as job requires.

Job description

Under direction, responsible for on-site supervision of City pools and surrounding aquatics areas.

Assists with the overall operation of all City pools and supervision of staff.

Leads, trains and oversees employees in job duties; provides supervisor with input and recommendations on employee performance and procedures.

Ensures staff and patron adherence to operating policies and procedures.

Effectively responds to emergency situations.

Assists in monitoring and evaluating aquatics staff on an ongoing basis to ensure consistency and quality in programs and operations.

Completes routine safety checks of pools, equipment and the surrounding aquatics area in order to maintain safety and health standards. Tests and maintains chemical balance of pools. Identifies and addresses problems. Performs opening and closing procedures.

Assists in performing routine cleaning, maintenance and repairs of aquatic equipment. Resolves problems as situations arise. Arranges assistance with maintenance and repairs, if necessary.

Provides quality customer service by responding to customer issues and concerns in a timely manner. Reports customer service issues and concerns to the supervisor.

Keeps accurate records of aquatic facility usage, rules violations, accidents, and chemical levels.

Performs life-guarding duties. Ensures the safety of guests by observing swimmers. Performs life-saving procedures.

Assists in developing and conducting in-service training sessions.

Instructs all levels of swim lessons as assigned.

Assists with special events including, but not limited to, Thorntonfest, Harvest Fest, and Winterfest.

May be required to work overtime.

May work a varying schedule and/or shift.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

High school diploma or GED and two full years or three seasons of aquatic leadership as a Head Lifeguard. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/ Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certificate. First Aid certificate. A certification in swim instructions such as Red Cross, WSI or equivalent training AND two years' experience in swim lesson instruction. Lifeguarding Certification (Red Cross or Ellis). Must have Ellis National Pool and Water Park Lifeguard Instructor Training license and Certified Pool Operator OR Aquatic Facility Operator certificate, or acquire these certifications within reasonable amount of time as determined by Supervisor.

May need ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of water safety.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective customer service.

Knowledge of aquatics facilities and equipment used in aquatics programs.

Knowledge of the basic principles of employee supervision and training.

Skill in performing life-saving and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) activities.

Skill in routine repair and maintenance of aquatics equipment.

Skill in maintaining a variety of records related to aquatics program operations.

Skill in accurately testing chemical levels of pools and adding or adjusting chemicals to maintain proper chemical balance.

Ability to effectively lead, schedule, assess, and train employees.

Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.

Ability to make sound judgments.

Ability to conduct patron swim lesson instruction.

Ability to diagnose problems, arrange and assist with maintenance and repairs, and ensure the ongoing safety of aquatics facilities.

Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.

Ability to organize and assist with special events.

Ability to promote and provide quality customer service.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, community members and the general public.

Physical and Mental Requirements

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine accuracy. The employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions, extreme cold, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

The employee is required to comply with all physical requirements of SCBA and/or any other respiratory protection equipment including passing all medical and fit testing.

Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
