The City of Dayton is seeking a Lifeguard to supervise aquatic and recreation activities at various facilities. Responsibilities include ensuring water safety, maintaining pool cleanliness, and providing swimming instruction.
Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and relevant certifications in lifeguarding and first aid. This role involves direct supervision and requires a valid driver's license.
An employee in this class is responsible for supervising life‑guarding, aquatic, and recreation activities at various recreation facilities. The employee receives general instructions concerning the overall recreational program to be administered at the various facilities, but each is expected to develop programs to meet specific area needs. Work is supervised through field visits, staff conferences and review of activity reports. Work also requires the application of specialized skills and training in the conduct of non‑aquatic recreation activities and an ability to meet the particular needs of the areas served.
The incumbent's primary role includes, but is not limited to, guarding the swimming pool to direct water safety and prevent accidents; ensuring non‑swimming participants stay in shallow water; making rescues and administering emergency first‑aid; providing swimming and water exercise instruction; maintaining order and discipline of participants; checking for proper maintenance of pool equipment, vacuuming and cleaning; treating pool water to maintain proper chemical balance; cleaning decks, gutters, scum lines; back‑washing filters and cleaning hair catches; cleaning restrooms, guard room and shower rooms.
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job‑related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
