Job summary

City of Longmont is seeking a skilled supervisor for its aquatic facilities. You will manage lifeguards, swim instructors, and frontline staff, ensuring safety and excellent service across all programs.

Expect to mentor staff, conduct training, and oversee pump room operations while maintaining facilities and safety records. You will teach American Red Cross Lifeguard classes, lead safety discussions, and coordinate responses to emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Current certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Water Safety Instructor.
  • Must have Colorado Driver’s License; ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, lead, mentor and assist lifeguards, swim instructors and staff in daily operations.
  • Assist with training and evaluating aquatic staff; improve lifesaving and swim instruction skills.
  • Promote and lead staff in safety-conscious decisions.
  • Ensure employees report to work on time and are assigned properly.

  • Record and monitor chemical readings; maintain logs for chemicals and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot pump room operations and perform minor pool repairs.
  • Enforce policies and maintain records for Health Codes compliance.
  • Defuse conflicts professionally and maintain positive relations with staff and patrons.
  • Teach American Red Cross Lifeguard classes.

Job description

Definition:

Under the supervision of Recreation Supervisor or Coordinator, manage City of Longmont Aquatic facilities, programs, and staff, to ensure all safety standards are adhered to. Supervise and mentor staff, perform routine pump room procedures, teach American Red Cross classes, promote a positive work environment, pool manage, teach swim lessons, lifeguard, and perform facility maintenance as scheduled.

Principal Duties:
  • Supervise, lead, mentor and assist Lead Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, WSI’s, Concessionaires, and Front Desk staff in their daily operations.
  • Assist with training and evaluating of all aquatic and concessionaire staff. Routinely work with aquatic staff to improve and practice their lifesaving and/or swim instruction skills.
  • Promote, participate, and lead staff in making decisions to foster a safety-conscious environment.
  • Ensure that employees report to work on time and are placed in their proper assignments, contact replacements, and complete employee counsel forms as needed.
  • Oversee the aquatic facility and programs in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Handles and/or reports any problems in staff relationships to the Aquatic Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Oversee and take chemical readings and make accurate, safe and necessary adjustments. Keep chemical, filter, and maintenance room logs current and accurate and communicate to supervisors when appropriate.
  • Routinely perform standardized pump room procedures, ability to troubleshoot to identify and fix routine pump room problems.
  • Performs minor repairs of pool equipment and assists Pool Technician with more substantial repairs.
  • Enforce policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of staff and patrons using the pool and maintain proper records and reports for adherence at all applicable Health Codes.
  • Communicates appropriate information to peers and supervisors in a timely, professional manner, follows established communication methods as directed by supervisory team.
  • Identify, respond to, and effectively take charge of non-emergency and emergency situations.
  • Complete, submit, review and maintain variety of forms and files: incident, accident, and facility safety checks.
  • Assists in chemical inventory and safety equipment to assure adequate stocks are available at all times.
  • Can defuse conflict situations professionally resulting in a positive resolution with staff, supervisors, and patrons.
  • Make and/or maintain cordial and professional public relations with patrons.
  • Teach American Red Cross Lifeguard classes.
  • Conduct consistent walk-throughs of pool facility, identify, and resolve any issues.
  • Observe, follow and enforce established policies and procedures regarding staff, facility, programs, and safety protocols in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Perform and oversee custodial maintenance of the facility including trash removal, snow removal, and the cleaning of pool areas, restrooms, locker rooms, and other patron and staff areas.
  • Perform start/end of shift starting cash verifications for front desk staff.
  • Perform recreation registration system transactions.
  • Assist in planning for, attend and participate in staff trainings.
  • Adhere to and perform open and closing procedures for City swimming pools.
  • Assist in administrative tasks including: time sheet accuracy and completeness, distribution of schedules, and front desk coverage.
  • Manage inventory of lifeguard equipment, fitness and safety supplies, pool chemicals, etc.
  • Maintain proper and serviceable safety equipment at all facilities including, but not limited to: rescue tubes, backboards, first aid and safety supplies, pool cleaning supplies.
  • Promote programs within the organization.
Qualifications:

Previous pool management experience with a combination of lifeguard and/or swim instruction experience, plus supervisory experience or demonstrated skills in leadership or supervision. Experience in maintaining pool chemistry and performing preventative pump room procedures. Experience troubleshooting and fixing pump operations desired. Prior customer service and conflict management experience. Special Qualifications: Current certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Water Safety Instructor. Current certifications or ability to obtain within six months of employment: Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, and Waterfront Lifeguard certifications. Desired certifications: American Red Cross Babysitting Training Instructor, Community CPR Instructor, Oxygen Administration. Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License.

Working Environment:

Work conditions are performed either indoors or outdoors and involves exposure to hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, direct sun and/or moderate to loud background noise. Work requires frequent use of fingers and hands, walking and standing, hearing, speaking, problem solving, math, verbal and written communication and customer contact, handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, custodial duties, slippery/uneven walking surfaces, working alone or working closely with others, moderate lifting of 50 lb. chemical bags, bending/stooping, kneeling and driving a City vehicle for errands.
