Job summary

SEIU is seeking an Assistant Director of Policy to plan, develop, and implement the International’s public policy positions under the Policy Director. The role focuses on advancing federal public policy programs, coordinating analyses, and shaping legislative strategies that support SEIU’s priorities.

The position requires leadership in policy development, the ability to communicate complex ideas, and the skill to coordinate with staff, partners, and government officials.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy or Political Science or related field.
• Master’s degree or graduate degree preferred.
• 3–5 years of supervisory experience and 5–7 years in policy analysis, or equivalent experience.
• Ability to develop creative policy solutions addressing workers’ needs.
• Ability to research and analyze policy and prepare clear materials.
• Understanding of federal politics and legislative processes.
• Experience managing staff and coordinating policy work.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of unions and labor movements is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and advance federal public policy programs, publications, and strategies.
• Direct analysis, testimony, and materials for policy positions.
• Advocate with federal, state, and local agencies as needed.
• Present SEIU positions before conferences, government groups, and public forums.
• Build relationships with strategic partners to drive a common agenda.
• Collaborate with Government Relations and other teams; coordinate with external partners.
• Manage professional staff and coordinate cross-team policy work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
