Job summary

Harris County Sheriff’s Office seeks a Policy Writer to perform senior policy research, analysis, and technical writing. You will develop, review, revise, and maintain complex policies to ensure legal soundness and operational practicality across departments.

The role requires translating regulatory requirements into clear policy language, coordinating with Legal Counsel and Executive Command, and guiding policy initiatives without formal supervisory authority.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Government, Political Science, English, Technical Communication, Journalism, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, or related field.
• Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience in policy research, policy analysis, regulatory analysis, technical writing, or related work, including at least two (2) years drafting or revising formal policies.
• Valid Driver's License (Texas upon hire).
• Candidate will be asked to submit a professional writing sample.

Responsibilities

• Directs research, drafting, and revision of complex, high-impact policies, procedures, and directives.
• Researches applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
• Interviews with executives, legal counsel, and subject-matter experts to develop policy content.
• Translates legal and regulatory information into clear policy language.
• Coordinates policy review with Legal Counsel and stakeholders.
• Leads policy development frameworks and communicates expectations.
