Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Principal Product Manager for Payroll Platform to define the vision and roadmap for a scalable API-driven payroll subsystem. You’ll partner with engineering, design, data, and compliance to architect a unified payroll API and oversee migrations, enabling AI agents to simplify complex payroll tasks and scale automation.

You’ll lead multi-team efforts, measure adoption and reliability, and apply platform-level thinking to deliver secure, trusted solutions for small businesses

Qualifications

• 8+ years of direct Product Management experience.
• Experience owning a platform, API or developer product and driving its adoption.
• Technical fluency in APIs, data models and system design, with experience leading a migration to a new API or interface.
• Hands-on experience building with LLMs or agents, including tool design and evaluations.
• Experience leading multi-team work across engineering, design and data, and connecting platform metrics to customer outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Ownership: Define the vision, strategy and roadmap for Payroll Platform and determine shared platform boundaries and API contracts.
• Drive adoption by teams, partners and agents building on payroll and define metrics for adoption, reliability and error rates.
• Collaborate across engineering, design, data and compliance; balance speed and safety in decisions.
• Build a unified payroll API and lead migrations of users and systems onto it to support different worker types.
• Define payroll actions, controls, audit trails and evaluations to enable safe AI agent use.
