Job summary

Edison Scientific is seeking a Principal CTO Staff to design, scale, and operate the core platform infrastructure powering autonomous scientific discovery. You will own the infrastructure foundation, orchestrating thousands of persistent workloads and building CRDs and operators for AI agent lifecycles.

Based in San Francisco, you will collaborate with backend, ML, and research teams to deliver a production-grade environment that enables faster scientific progress while maintaining reliability

Qualifications

• Typically 10+ years of professional infrastructure or platform engineering experience.
• Deep hands-on Kubernetes expertise in production environments.
• Experience designing CRDs and Kubernetes operators.
• Track record of operating and scaling Kubernetes clusters at scale.
• Deep understanding of Kubernetes internals and how they behave at scale.
• Expertise with cloud infrastructure (AWS EKS, GCP GKE, or Azure AKS).
• Proficiency in at least one systems or backend language for operator development.
• Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools and GitOps workflows.
• Strong knowledge of container networking, storage, security, and observability.

Responsibilities

• Architect, implement, and operate Kubernetes clusters that support thousands of concurrent, persistent resources.
• Design CRDs and Kubernetes operators to model AI agent lifecycles and long-running workloads.
• Drive cluster scaling strategies and autoscaling policies to handle rapid growth.
• Build infrastructure-as-code for reproducible environment management.
• Design robust scheduling, placement, and affinity strategies for heterogeneous workloads.
• Establish observability, monitoring, and incident response for infrastructure systems.
• Own storage and networking strategy within Kubernetes and related components.
• Troubleshoot cross-system infrastructure issues and guide teams through remediation.
• Collaborate with backend, ML, and research teams to translate workload requirements into infrastructure patterns.
