Job summary

Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) seeks a Senior Operating Engineer in Macclenny, FL to lead and perform maintenance of heating and air conditioning systems in the Northeast Florida State Hospital complex. Qualifications

• Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in the operation and maintenance of heating and/or air-conditioning equipment.
• Skill in using hand tools.
• Skill in repairing heating and/or air-conditioning equipment.
• Ability to operate or coordinate the operation of boilers or an air-conditioning plant.
• Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Responsibilities

• Check the prior shift's operations report to determine what problems were encountered and if repairs are necessary.
• Make rounds of heating plant, check gauges and log readings every two hours; verify alarm bells and warning lights.
• Monitor boilers by checking temperature/pressure, flame, and emissions; log results.
• Blow down generators, test water chemistry, and adjust chemical dosing to maintain limits.
• Inspect/repair boiler burner tips; re-ignite if flame is out; service generators and inspect seals.
• Service air compressors by changing oil and lubricating bearings.
• Inspect water softeners; perform cooling tower chemical treatment and monitor softness.
• Monitor natural gas to boilers; take gas inventory; service cooling towers and fans.
• Start and test emergency generator; perform routine maintenance on heating plant systems.
• Assist with cleaning boiler fire boxes; enter confined spaces as required.
• Perform related duties as required.
