Job summary

ATOMS is seeking a Perception Engineer in San Francisco to build perception systems for autonomous machines. You will tackle CV/ML problems across sensors, developing models for real-time environment understanding and robust perception in industrial settings.

You’ll collaborate with AI R&D, Robotics, ML Infrastructure, Software, Hardware, and Systems teams to push boundaries and deploy real-world perception enhancements.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of relevant experience with perception systems and CV/ML models.
• Strong software engineering skills in Python and/or C++.
• Experience developing perception systems for autonomous vehicles, robotics, drones, or industrial automation.
• Experience with camera, LiDAR, radar, IMU, or other robotic sensors.
• Experience with multi-modal or multi-sensor architectures.
• Knowledge of 3D geometry, coordinate transformations, calibration, localization, or state estimation.
• Experience deploying ML models into real-time or safety-critical systems.
• Experience optimizing models for latency, compute, memory, or power constraints.
• Experience with large-scale perception datasets and training infrastructure.
• Experience diagnosing long-tail failures and improving production perception systems through data-driven iteration.
• Experience taking research ideas from experimentation through deployment on physical systems.
• Publications or significant contributions in CV/ML/robotics are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, train, and deploy ML models for perception in autonomous systems.
• Develop algorithms for object detection, classification, segmentation, tracking, and scene understanding.
• Build systems for 3D perception and geometric reasoning using cameras, LiDAR, radar, or other sensors.
• Develop multi-sensor fusion and multi-modal representations of environments.
• Build temporal models to reason about objects, motion, and changes over time.
• Improve perception performance in challenging real-world conditions and edge cases.
• Create data, training, evaluation, and experimentation pipelines for perception.
• Define metrics and evaluation methodologies linking offline performance to real-world behavior.
• Optimize models and systems for resource-constrained robotic platforms.
• Investigate failures and translate findings into improvements across models and architecture.
• Collaborate with AI Research, Robotics, ML Infrastructure, Software, Hardware, and Systems Engineering.
