Job summary

Atoms seeks a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer focused on Perception to join our SF office. You will shape how raw sensor data becomes rich representations and work across camera, LiDAR, radar, and audio to build robust perception systems.

You will influence the stack’s direction, collaborate with AI research, robotics, and engineering leaders, and drive architect-level decisions that enable real-world autonomy and scalability.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in machine learning and computer vision, with substantial experience building sophisticated perception systems.
• Strong understanding of modern deep learning architectures and their application to visual and multimodal perception.
• Experience with real-world sensor modalities such as cameras, LiDAR, radar, audio, or depth sensors.
• Experience in sensor fusion, multimodal learning, 3D perception, scene understanding, or related areas.
• Strong ML lifecycle knowledge from data strategy to deployment.
• Ability to design ML systems operating under real-world latency and compute constraints.
• Hands-on software engineering in Python and/or C++ with solid fundamentals.
• Track record of technical leadership and architectural decision-making.
• Ability to communicate complex ideas across research and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Define and help build the technical architecture for Atoms’ next-generation perception systems.
• Develop machine learning systems that transform multimodal sensor inputs into representations of the physical environment.
• Advance multi-sensor and multimodal fusion for real-world environments.
• Design deep learning architectures for detection, segmentation, tracking, and 3D perception.
• Explore world models and foundation models for perception pipelines.
• Build perception systems to serve downstream reasoning and planning models.
• Make data, model, training, evaluation, and deployment decisions.
• Balance model quality with latency, efficiency, and reliability constraints.
• Establish evaluation methods and metrics for perception performance.
• Collaborate with researchers and engineers across related domains.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews and mentorship.
