Sherpa | Recruiting, Staffing & Consulting is seeking a Senior Payroll Tax Manager to lead payroll tax compliance across a multi-state organization in the Charlotte, NC area. You will own the regulatory framework and partner with Payroll, HR, Finance, Legal, IT, and vendors to ensure accuracy and continuous improvement.

Requirements include 8+ years in payroll tax, 3+ years of people management, knowledge of federal/state/local rules, and experience with SAP or MasterTax.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • 8+ years of payroll tax experience, including multi-state payroll.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • CPP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, filings, deposits, and remittances.
  • Oversee quarter end and year end payroll tax processes, including W-2 reporting.
  • Manage payroll tax setup, configuration, taxability rules, wage types, and system logic.
  • Own payroll tax controls, documentation, reconciliations, and audit readiness.
  • Lead internal and external payroll tax audits, including remediation and resolution.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure timely updates to payroll systems and processes.
  • Partner with IT, payroll vendors, HR, Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Benefits on tax initiatives.
  • Support system testing, due diligence, integrations, and process improvements.
  • Lead and develop a team of payroll tax professionals.

Job Overview - Senior Payroll Tax Manager - 34444

Our client is seeking a Senior Payroll Tax Manager to lead payroll tax compliance, controls, governance, and process optimization across a complex, multi state organization. This role will serve as the subject matter expert for payroll tax regulations and partner closely with Payroll, HR, Finance, Legal, IT, and external vendors to ensure compliance, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Do
  • Lead federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, filings, deposits, and remittances

  • Manage payroll tax setup, configuration, taxability rules, wage types, and system logic
  • Own payroll tax controls, documentation, reconciliations, and audit readiness

  • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure timely updates to payroll systems and processes

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
  • 8+ years of payroll tax experience, including multi state payroll
  • 3+ years of people management experience
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
  • Experience with payroll systems and tax filing platforms; SAP and MasterTax preferred
  • CPP certification preferred
