We are looking for a detail-oriented Payroll Accountant to support payroll accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting. This role will be responsible for ensuring payroll-related transactions are accurately recorded, reconciled, and reported while partnering with Payroll, Accounting, and other internal teams to maintain accurate financial records and resolve discrepancies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute payroll-related accounting activities as part of the monthly and quarterly close process.
- Prepare and record payroll journal entries, including wages, salaries, payroll taxes, benefits, bonuses, commissions, and other payroll-related accruals.
- Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts and ensure payroll activity is accurately reflected in the financial statements.
- Review payroll reports and supporting documentation to identify and resolve discrepancies between payroll systems and the general ledger.
- Record and relieve payroll accruals and ensure balances are properly supported and cleared timely.
- Prepare account reconciliations for payroll, accrued payroll, payroll taxes, benefits, and other related balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with intercompany payroll allocations and reconciliations as needed.
- Prepare supporting schedules and financial information for month-end and quarter-end reporting.
- Analyze payroll-related accounts and financial statements, identifying unusual or significant variances from prior periods and budget.
- Ensure payroll accounting practices comply with US GAAP and company policies.
- Partner closely with Payroll, HR, Finance, and Accounting teams to ensure payroll information is complete, accurate, and recorded in the appropriate accounting periods.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing payroll-related schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
- Support the Accounting Manager with ad hoc projects and other accounting initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related
- 3–5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with payroll accounting experience required
- Experience with payroll journal entries, payroll accruals, reconciliations, and payroll-related GL accounts
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and US GAAP
- Experience with financial systems, general ledger, and/or payroll systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve discrepancies
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Payroll, HR, Accounting, management, and external partners
