Senior Payroll Accountant
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Senior Payroll Accountant to join our People Operations team serving as a key partner across HR, finance, and compliance functions. This role will manage the payroll accounting function including payroll processing, reconciliation, reporting, and payroll tax. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of multi-state US payroll compliance, state and federal payroll tax, GL reporting, and internal controls.
What You'll Do
Payroll Operations
- Process and review payroll on a [weekly/biweekly] basis, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Handle payroll configuration, including new earnings/deductions and system updates.
- Administer garnishments, pay cards, check handling, and final day pay
- Manage bonus and incentive payout processing
- Support audits and implement payroll controls to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Maintain pay compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., OT calculations, final paycheck laws).
- Provide support for timekeeping and Paid Time Off setup and policies.
- Respond to internal payroll-related inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Manage W-2 processing and year-end close.
General Ledger (GL) Reporting
- Collaborate with Finance to review payroll-related GL entries and ensure correct mapping.
- Support month-end close process.
- Maintain GL mapping within UKG Pro, reconciling data across all systems including Microsoft Dynamics.
- Investigate and resolve GL fallouts in a timely manner.
Tax Management
- Complete new state tax / local tax / UI registrations ensuring accurate tax code setup in UKG Pro.
- Proactively follow up on tax code errors and resolve discrepancies.
- Support and audit quarterly and year-end tax packages.
- Comply with state disability and PFML withholding requirements.
- Comply with state workers’ compensation (WC) withholding requirements.
- Process tax adjustments as needed
What You’ll Bring
- Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws.
- Experience with payroll systems, preferably UKG Pro.
- Solid understanding of accounting principles and general ledger reporting.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
- Proven ability to audit, identify issues, and recommend solutions.
- Self-motivated with a focus on process improvement and efficiency.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in payroll and/or payroll accounting.
- 3+ years of experience in UKG Pro / UKG Pro WFM
- Experience with payroll tax audits and filings.
- Intermediate/Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP systems and integrations is a plus.
Preferred Certifications
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification) preferred.
