Job summary

The City of Georgetown, Texas is seeking a Parks Maintenance Worker to assist the Parks Maintenance Foreman, supervise staff, and help maintain our trails, parks, facilities, equipment and grounds with safety and efficiency. You will mow, edge, repair, clean, install playgrounds, inspect areas for damage, manage irrigation, operate light and heavy equipment, and support events.

A Class A Texas CDL is required; pesticide and playground safety certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of full-time landscaping/park maintenance experience or equivalent.
  • Valid Class A Texas Commercial driver’s license is required.
  • Pesticide Applicator’s License, preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid, preferred.
  • Certified Playground Safety Certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Mows, edges grass, trims trees and shrubs, maintains trails and fields.
  • Repairs/paints doors, gates, fences and other facilities.
  • Cleans restrooms, pavilions and structures.
  • Assembles and repairs playground structures; handles light construction tasks.
  • Performs rounds to inspect areas for damage and performs repairs (plumbing, lights).
  • Performs irrigation checks and repairs.
  • May assign work or assist Parks Maintenance Workers with tasks.
  • Operates heavy machinery and light equipment.
  • Supports events with setup and teardown tasks.
  • Maintains records as required by policy.

Under general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Foreman, supervises assigned staff and participates in the maintenance of the trails system. Determines ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Assists in maintaining City parks, facilities, equipment, and grounds; cleans and repairs park facilities; conducts routine landscaping and facilities maintenance tasks

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Mows, edges grass, trims trees and shrubs, maintains green spaces and trails; prepares sports fields.
  • Maintains facilities by repairing/replacing doors, gates, fences, minor repairs, and painting.
  • Cleans restrooms, pavilions, and other structures.
  • Assembles; constructs and repairs playground structures; completes and works on light/small construction projects.
  • Performs daily rounds of facilities and park land and fields to inspect areas for damage/vandalism; performs repair and maintenance functions, including plumbing, lights, etc.
  • Performs irrigation checks and repairs.
  • May assign work and/or assist Parks Maintenance Workers with completion of tasks.
  • Operates heavy machinery and light equipment to properly complete assigned tasks.
  • Supports special events by setting up, tearing down, and other miscellaneous duties.
  • Completes and maintains records as required by department policy.
  • Performs all job duties according to all approved safety rules and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in landscaping, or park maintenance or related experience.
  • OR Any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of: Equipment used in grounds keeping or other related work.
  • Parks and recreational facility maintenance and repair.
  • Safety practices and procedures.
  • Light/Heavy machinery operation.
  • Construction, electrical, irrigation, concrete and/or plumbing practices and procedures.
  • Herbicide and pesticide use and application.
  • City practices and procedures.
  • Skill in: Comprehending and following oral and written instructions.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Lift, move and/or carry equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work.
  • Operating light and heavy equipment.
  • Reading memos, instructions, warning labels, road signs, etc.
  • Preparing work orders and reports for supervisor.
  • Measuring and mixing cleaning agents/pesticides.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Class A Texas Commercial driver’s license.
  • Pesticide Applicator’s License, preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid, preferred.
  • Certified Playground Safety Certification, preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
  • Exposure to weather extremes, especially the sun, exposed to pesticides.

Hiring Range: $20.24 - $25.36, hourly.
