Role: Senior Paralegal
Location: San Diego, CA 92101
Duration: 12 Months

Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience; or an equivalent level of education may be substituted.

Required Skills

At least two years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required. At least one year of experience in automated litigation support. Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources. Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

Responsibilities

The Senior Paralegal shall provide comprehensive litigation support to [client attorneys] throughout all phases of litigation. Paralegals will work closely with assigned [client attorneys] during the progression of cases, providing both substantive and administrative support. This includes organizing and managing documents and data gathered during investigations and litigation, maintaining proper chain of custody for all collected information, and ensuring the integrity and accessibility of case materials. Paralegals may assist attorneys in evaluating complaints and referrals involving potential unlawful conduct, conducting research related to investigative targets and unlawful schemes, and preparing summaries of relevant legal authorities. Additional duties may include reviewing, annotating, and summarizing transcripts and other factual materials; obtaining financial, statistical, agency, court, and other public records; drafting data and document requests, research reports, memoranda, correspondence, and pleadings; cite-checking and proofreading legal filings; and electronically filing pleadings and other court documents. Paralegals may also attend and participate in witness interviews and prepare detailed interview reports. In preparation for trial, the Senior Paralegal may attend pre-trial meetings, organize and review exhibits and case materials for accuracy and completeness, identify deficiencies, and coordinate the collection of supplemental information as needed. During and after trial, the paralegal shall support the trial team with organizational and administrative tasks, including preparing summaries of testimony and depositions. The Senior Paralegal shall provide case management support utilizing various software applications, including CaseView for opening, closing, and updating cases. The paralegal may also use Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and other relevant applications to prepare documents, charts, and visual presentations for use in meetings, briefs, and trial proceedings.

Seek out, develop, and obtain information to support investigations and litigation efforts through contact and correspondence with law enforcement personnel, officials from other governmental agencies, witnesses, and counsel.

  • Utilize automated legal research tools, public information databases, and other electronic resources to conduct research on case-or program-specific legal matters and to support proceedings, including electronic discovery activities.
  • Review incoming materials and independently determine appropriate processing and routing.
  • Obtain financial and statistical information for an analysis and evaluation of complaints and referrals regarding potential unlawful conduct.
  • Request, obtain, and review agency records, court records, and other public documents relevant to assigned cases.
  • Secure required information from appropriate agencies and prepare draft legal documents for review and submission by the assigned [CLIENT ATTORNEY].
  • Read, annotate, and summarize documents, files, records, transcripts, and other materials contained within case files.
  • Identify potential witnesses; conduct or attend witness interviews; and prepare written reports memorializing interviews.
  • Prepare responsive documents and correspondence with limited instruction from the [CLIENT ATTORNEY].
  • Verify citations and legal authorities contained in legal documents using original and electronic resources, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency with source material.
  • Scan, organize, and process materials gathered during investigations and discovery in coordination with the [CLIENT ATTORNEY], and assist with providing discovery materials to opposing counsel in accordance with applicable rules and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain case files and reference materials. Search legal reference files as needed; separate, screen, assemble, and organize records for disposition or transfer to records repositories in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Docket all assigned cases in the office's case management system (CaseView) and ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Review documents within litigation support databases, including but not limited to Relativity and Eclipse.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using office software applications, ensuring proper formatting and accuracy in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
  • Maintain calendars for assigned active cases, track filing and hearing deadlines, develop and manage suspense systems, and notify [client attorneys] of pending dates and deadlines. Maintain [CLIENT ATTORNEY] calendars and provide reminders of commitments and court appearances.
  • Contractor shall support and assist attorneys in the courtroom by preparing exhibit cross-references, and screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
