Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking a Senior Outpatient Coder to ensure accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding for day surgery and observation encounters, in line with regulatory guidelines. The role emphasizes high-quality abstracting, physician query processes, and adherence to AHIMA standards.

The ideal candidate will hold RHIT/RHIA/CCS/CCA/CCS-P/CPC, have outpatient coding experience, and be proficient with EHR systems and coding software, ensuring timely and accurate coding outcomes.

Qualifications

• Associate or higher degree in CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program or equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
• Three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program.
• RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC certifications are required.

Responsibilities

• Assign diagnostic and procedure codes to high-complexity encounters accurately.
• Review documentation in the EHR and encoder to determine principal diagnoses and procedures.
• Query physicians to obtain or clarify diagnoses/procedures.
• Adhere to AHIMA standards and coding guidelines.
